Rolo
“We will not take anyone home today!” was our mantra as Angi and I drove to Bakersfield to get supplies in winter, 2024.
We already had 2 moms with 2 large litters of newborns at the ranch, and were stretched pretty thin.
This shelter visit was for administrative purposes only…
…until we had to wait in the office for a few minutes. Instead of sitting quietly, we wandered out the door to the kennels.
It is heartbreaking to see rows of dog after dog, begging for attention, to be looked at, to be chosen.
As we turned back from the scene, a tiny little red face caught our eye from behind the bars. It was a “toddler”- a weaned puppy who is still a baby. She was all alone- no littermates, no mother, and she had the most beseeching eyes -; We knew we could not abandon her.
So, we checked her out of that place, happened to have a tiny crate to put her in, loaded her up in the Tesla (I need a truck!!) and home she came with us.
Angi named her “Rolo”, and- since she was all alone- Angi took her into her house as one of her own. Rolo got very sick with kennel cough- predictably, and almost died!. It was the intensive care Angi gave her (the puppy sleeping on Angi’s chest so she knew the puppy was still breathing, the round the clock medications, etc) that pulled this puppy through.
As Rolo grew into a gorgeous young dog, we knew she needed her own family. Fate presents in mysterious ways, and the young man who came to buy a saddle for his girlfriend locked eyes with Rolo, and they have been partners ever since!! We are now friends with this couple, and get frequent updates on how loved and spoiled Rolo is – she is truly living her best life! From street urchin to princess, and we are so grateful.
